CQC Registered Dental Practice: Commitment to Quality Care

The Care Quality Commission are an independent body, who regulate health and social care standards, these standards have to be met by all dental practices. All practices that meet these standards are registered by the CQC, and must be able to demonstrate compliance with these regulations to maintain their registration.

The CQC standards include:

Respecting and involving people who use our services
- Patients understand the care treatment and support choices available to them
- Patients can express their views and are involved in decisions about their care and treatment
- Patients’ privacy, dignity and independence are respected
- Patients’ views and experiences are taken into account in the provision of Services

Consent and care to treatment
- Patients give valid consent to care and treatment provided or planned
- Patients understand their right to change any decisions agreed
- Patients know their human rights are respected

- Patients know what, when and how to pay
- They know what they are paying for
- They are aware of the practice policy in relation to fees
- They are not pressured to agree to treatment or fees
- Someone can explain their options and costs clearly
- NHS and private treatment is clearly distinguished
- Estimated fees (e.g. lab work) are indicated and advised to patients

Care and welfare of people who use services
- Patients experience effective, safe and appropriate care and treatment which meets their needs

Meeting nutritional needs
- Patients are supported to have adequate nutrition and hydration

Cooperating with other providers
- Patients receive co-ordinated care and treatment where more than one provider is involved or where they are moved between services

Safeguarding patients from abuse
- Patients and service users are protected from abuse or the risk of abuse and their human rights are respected and upheld

Cleanliness and infection control
- The practice complies with at least the Essential Quality Requirements of HTM 01-05 and with the Approved Code of Practice for Health and Adult Social Care

Management of medicines
- Patients will receive their medicines at the times they need them, and safely
- Wherever possible, patients will have information about prescribed medicines available to them or to others acting on their behalf

Safety and suitability of premises
- Patients and those who work in or visit the premises are in safe accessible surroundings that promote their wellbeing

Safety, availability and suitability of equipment
- Patients and staff are not at risk of harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment both clinical and non-clinical
- Patients and staff benefit from equipment that is comfortable and meets their needs

Requirements relating to workers
- Patients are safe, and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally competent

- Patients are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by sufficient numbers of staff

Supporting workers
- Patients are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff

Assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision
- Patients benefit from safe, quality care, treatment and support, following from effective decision making and the management of risks to their health, welfare and safety

- Patients or those acting on their behalf are sure that their comments and complaints are listened to and acted upon
- Patients and others who complain know that they will not be discriminated against as a result

Notifications to CQC
The CQC must be notified of specific incidents or events, including:
- The death of a patient
- Serious accidents or injuries to patients under treatment
- Failure of utilities or services which suspend activities for more than 24 hours
- Staffing shortage which causes suspension of activities for more than 24 hours
- Absence of the Provider or Registered Manager for more than 28 days
- Any incidents at the location which involve the police
- Death of the/a provider

- Those who use services can be confident that their personal and dental records are accurate, fit for purpose, held securely and are confidential
- Other records required to be held to protect patients’ safety and wellbeing are maintained and held securely
