Gum Specialist
Have you been told you have gum disease?
Do you have loose teeth?
If so you may need to see Wendy - our gum specialist, known as a periodontist.
Wendy treats patients with moderate non-reversible gum disease.
What is gum disease?
There are different stages of gum disease:
1. Gingivitis - this happens when the gum tissue becomes swollen and red through aggravation. The source of this is normally plaque bacteria, which is left on the teeth through poor oral hygiene (poor tooth brushing and flossing techniques).
2. Periodontitis - this is advanced gum disease. The first stage has been left untreated and the gum is now pulling away from the bone creating pockets. The pockets become filled with more and more bacteria from plaque - this is a vicious cycle. Plaque hardens which does not allow the gum to heal. When the plaque hardens the attachment of the tooth to the bone is eaten away and teeth become loose.
This is where a periodontist helps. They have special ways of treating the pockets and clearing the hardened plaque. They show you how to clean these pockets on a daily basis with the aim of the pockets tightening again.
Gum disease is often painless and irreversible - however a specialist can help to stop the disease spreading any further and help you avoid losing the currently diseased / loose teeth.
